Not only does the Terrain have excellent features inside and out, especially in terms of tech and convenience, but it’s also easier to find what you’re looking for. One Engine That Gets the Job Done

With a compact SUV like the Terrain, however, we don’t necessarily need a bunch of engines to choose from.

This is a 1.5L turbocharged engine that delivers 175 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque, depending on the model. Although we like that GMC offers just one great engine, we also appreciate that they still give you options for the kind of performance you want. What it comes down to is that we prefer having options and decisions that make sense and work well to help folks get what they want. The 2026 Terrain comes with front-wheel drive (FWD) as standard, which is terrific for a compact SUV like this. GMC offers all-wheel drive (AWD) on the Terrain, letting you choose the drive type and handling that suit you best. This is especially good in other places that get snow, but even around Sandy Springs, it can be a great choice. Every Forester comes with AWD, and there’s no option for FWD; we prefer how GMC lets you choose what will work best for you.

GMC Makes Trim Choice Simple

Arguably, the most glaring example of how GMC keeps things simple and hassle-free is the trim levels available for these two vehicles. You have three fantastic options for the Terrain, so you can get the driving experience you want. Subaru, on the other hand, goes completely overboard with options. For the Terrain, you can pick:

• Terrain Elevation: The Elevation is the starting trim available in FWD or AWD. This trim features 17-inch wheels, LED headlamps and taillamps, and power-adjustable outside mirrors. Inside, the Elevation features an incredible 15-inch infotainment display, with an 11-inch Driver Information Center. You also get premium cloth seats, plus more than 16 standard driver-assistance features.
• Terrain AT4: This is the way to go if you want some off-road capabilities, with standard AWD and all-terrain tires. The AT4 has a front skid plate and a steel underbelly shield, making it great for reaching your favorite campsite or navigating many gravel roads. You get a wireless phone charger inside, with Cloth/CoreTec seating, plus more to enjoy.
• Terrain Denali: If you’re looking for the most sophisticated features, then the Denali trim is the way to go. This trim has available 20-inch wheels for a bold stance, and you can get a panoramic power sunroof that looks great. Inside the Denali, you’ll find perforated and leather-appointed front seats that are ventilated to stay cool in Sandy Springs summers.

As you can see, GMC gives you three great options to pick from, and it’s easy to note what each one has to offer. With the 2026 Forester, Subaru offers 11 different trim levels, which we find completely overwhelming. We’re not about to get into the details of each one because we’d quickly get lost in them, but here’s a list of all 11 trims so you can see what we mean:

You can see that some of this excess comes from hybrid models being their own trims, rather than simply having the hybrid engine available for standard models. But even if we put aside those four options, there are still six distinct trims available. That seems like overkill to us for a compact SUV like the Forester, and we much prefer how simple GMC keeps everything.

What might be even more noteworthy is that GMC also gives you some far better features. We mentioned that the Terrain comes with a standard 15-inch infotainment display; the Forester, by comparison, starts with a seven-inch screen. Going with a higher trim to get advanced options can get you an 11.6-inch display from Subaru, but nothing that competes with what GMC gives you as a standard feature in the Terrain.

Extra Options to Get What You Want

Just because we find the large number of trims from Subaru rather overwhelming doesn’t mean we’re against having options. In fact, another thing we appreciate about how GMC has the Terrain set up is that you can pick from several packages and available options to further customize your SUV. This lets you get exactly what you want without missing a thing.

For example, you can choose the standard Elevation trim and then pick the available Elevation Premium Package to get an eight-way power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, 19-inch wheels, and more. Going with the Denali trim already gets you many terrific features, but you can still choose from available packages to get even more.

The Black Badging package for the Denali, for example, adds Black nameplates, front and rear Black GMC emblems, and similar details. Although some packages are available from Subaru, things feel more limited overall, likely because there are so many trims to choose from. So customization is trickier to achieve, while GMC keeps things incredibly flexible for you.
