Our Legacy

Jim Ellis Buick GMC of Atlanta is part of the renowned Jim Ellis Automotive Group that's served Atlanta and the surrounding areas since the 1970s. Our namesake and founder, Jim Ellis, spent his childhood on the Atlanta Prison Farm property, where his father was a foreman and his grandfather was the superintendent. Between his environment and mentors, Jim learned the value of hard work and divided his time between the farm and various other jobs. He ran a milk and paper route, opened a concessions business at Grant Park, ran a laundry service, and dabbled in construction before he enrolled at West Georgia College.

After transferring to Georgia State University, Jim balanced his coursework with multiple jobs to pay for college. He sold insurance, worked in real estate, and returned to the prison as a guard and foreman before earning his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1957. After college, he served two years in the United States Army and returned home to join the automotive industry in 1960, when he was hired by General Motors.

Jim finally found his calling and spent the next decade learning everything he could about the industry. By 1970, he and his wife, Billie, took a massive leap of faith when they sold their assets and poured everything they had into opening Jim Ellis Volkswagen in 1971. Jim's dream of serving customers and introducing a new car-buying experience was born, laying the foundation for the Jim Ellis Automotive Group and dealerships like ours.

Today, Jim Ellis Buick GMC of Atlanta is one of many dealerships that bear the Jim Ellis name, with Jim's children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren taking active roles in the business. This family-centric approach pays homage to Jim's vision of building a legacy he could hand down to his children and one that would continue to grow with every customer he served.
