When it comes to a full-size truck, you deserve to get something that you will enjoy driving and that provides you with enough muscle to tackle everything you need to do. Looking at the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 vs 2026 Ford F-150, we can see that these are both impressive trucks with a lot to offer. But as we dig deeper, the merits of the Sierra 1500 ultimately come out on top.
Both of these trucks have numerous engines available, giving you the freedom to get the power you need. The standard engine for the GMC Sierra 1500 is an excellent choice, with more torque than Ford’s standard powertrain. What’s more, you can get superior towing and payload with the standard engine if you go with GMC’s truck.
We see these kinds of similarities, where GMC ultimately gives you more, as we look both inside and out at these trucks. Both have three beds, but the cargo capacity you get with the Sierra 1500 is superior, and you can get more impressive tech and comfort features inside GMC’s pickup. So no matter what you are looking for, the Sierra 1500 is the way to go.
Engines and Performance
As you check out what a full-size truck can do, we find that the engine is the perfect place to start. Whether you are simply driving to work or pulling a boat behind you on the weekend, you need a great powertrain to make that happen. Both of these trucks offer numerous engines, but we find what you can get from GMC far more compelling.
Standard Powertrain Performance
We could be here all day just looking at the different engines available for these two trucks and seeing what they have to offer. Focusing on the standard powertrains that each one comes with is a great way to get a sense of the kind of power these pickups provide. The standard engines tell us a lot about how these two companies focus on power and performance.
The 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 has a fantastic standard powertrain: a 2.7L TurboMax turbocharged I-4 engine that delivers 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. That is massive performance for the starting point with this pickup. It means that even if you want to keep things simple with a reliable work truck, you still get plenty of muscle to handle everything you need to do.
Looking at the 2026 F-150, Ford comes pretty close to what GMC offers and puts up a good fight, but we prefer what the Sierra 1500 has. The F-150 comes with a standard 2.7L EcoBoost engine that provides 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. That’s a bit more horsepower but notably less torque, which we find leaves the Ford truck feeling a bit weaker than the GMC, especially when towing is a concern.
Options for Different Engines
Of course, we cannot limit ourselves to the standard engines for these two trucks, even though it is the perfect place to start and a great area to focus on. Since both of these pickups have more engines available, we should consider what they have to offer. Ford offers more powertrain options for the F-150, but some are only available on specific trims. This means there are really only four powertrain choices if you want the flexibility to choose from multiple trims.
Ford’s trim-specific engines boast massive horsepower and torque for the F-150, but they are reserved for higher-end trims that are outside the range of what many buyers typically consider. There are other V6 and V8 engines available for the F-150, which is good to see, but overall, the selection can feel overwhelming while still lacking flexibility across the lineup.
That “something” is a diesel engine; there is no diesel available for the 2026 Ford F-150. With the GMC Sierra 1500, however, you can choose a 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel that delivers up to 305 hp and an impressive 495 lb-ft of torque. We love that GMC gives you this option, along with other powertrains, so you can get everything you want from your next truck.
Towing and Payload
The kind of power and performance you get from a truck engine is certainly important, but real-world functionality is often more essential. For a lot of us, that comes down to the kind of towing and payload capacities a truck can manage. Both of these trucks have massive maximum capabilities, but we’re going to focus on starting muscle here today.
Standard Towing Capabilities
There is no denying that towing is an important part of having a truck for a lot of people. You want a pickup that can get a lot done, whether that is hauling a load of drywall across town or pulling a boat behind you on a day off. We looked at the standard engines for these two trucks a moment ago, but let’s see what those two powertrains offer for maximum towing:
- Sierra 1500: 9,500 lbs
- Ford F-150: 8,400 lbs
That is a substantial difference between these two pickups, which gives the GMC truck a massive advantage. Keep in mind that other factors can impact the towing your truck can do, but when properly equipped, these numbers represent the best their standard engines offer. Just over a 1,000 lbs of difference can have a big impact on what you can do with your truck each day.
Standard Payload Ratings
Although towing is important to us, we know that not everyone plans on hauling a bunch of weight behind their truck each day. But even for folks not interested in towing, payload is an important spec to consider since you want to be able to load up the bed of your pickup with everything you need. So let’s see how these trucks compare with their standard engines:
- Sierra 1500: 2,240 lbs
- Ford F-150: 1,775 lbs
Once again, we see a substantial difference and a huge advantage for the Sierra 1500. You can pile nearly 500 lbs more into GMC’s truck bed when properly configured with its standard engine. This can mean the difference between getting everything done in a single trip and having to make multiple trips just to transport everything you need.
Bed Sizes and Cargo Space
Both of these trucks have numerous options available for their overall configuration, including different cab sizes and bed lengths. This is an important thing to consider when shopping for a truck since it impacts how much stuff you can easily load up and take with you. We saw that the Sierra 1500 has a greater standard payload, but what about the room you get for loading up?
You have three bed lengths available with these two trucks; at a glance, they seem very similar because they are nearly identical in length. The GMC Sierra 1500 offers a 5.8 ft bed, a 6.6 ft bed, and an 8.2 ft bed. Ford offers a 5.5 ft bed, a 6.5 ft bed, and an 8 ft bed for the F-150. But what about actual cargo capacity? Let’s see…

You can see that the actual cargo capacities of GMC’s trucks are much larger than what the F-150 can hold. So you get a greater payload rating with the standard engine in the Sierra 1500, and every bed offers much more volume for you to load stuff into. Ford just cannot compete.
Interior Tech and Comfort Features
So far, we have focused largely on standard features because we like to see the bare minimum of what a truck can do. Sometimes, however, it is nice to look at some high-end features and options to see the best of what is available. Going with the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate, for example, gets you some amazing features inside.
You get a gorgeous 13.4-inch GMC Premium infotainment system with Google built-in, paired with a 12.3-inch color Driver Information Center display. This trim features a 12-speaker Bose Premium sound system with CenterPoint for stunning audio, plus the Super Cruise hands-free driving system. You also get 16-way power front seats that are heated and ventilated, featuring a massage function for an incredibly comfortable drive each day.
Looking at the high-end Platinum trim for the F-150, we find a smaller 12-inch infotainment display with a 12-inch digital productivity screen for the driver. The Platinum features a B&O Unleashed sound system, which is good but we much prefer the rich audio of GMC’s Bose Premium system. 10-way power seating is provided in the Platinum, which is heated, but pales in comparison to what GMC provides in the Denali Ultimate.
