This is a great question to ask when you’re looking for your next midsize truck and considering your options. Although we’re happy to show you everything a GMC Canyon for sale can do, we understand how important it is to have a sense of what you want before you visit a dealership.

We could simply point out some of our favorite things about the 2026 Canyon, but we think the best way to fully appreciate what it has to offer is to compare it to another model, such as the 2026 Toyota Tacoma. So let’s explore why you should pick this truck and see how well the Canyon delivers in ways that Toyota’s midsize truck doesn’t.

An Amazing Standard Powertrain

We can’t think of a better place to start looking at any truck, even midsize models, than the engine and the kind of power and performance it delivers. GMC is well known for making some of the most remarkable and sophisticated engines in the auto industry, designed to deliver big power and robust capabilities.

Whether you want a midsize work truck or you’re primarily looking for a daily driver to get you around town and to enjoy yourself on the weekend, big power is important for whatever you need to do. With the GMC Canyon, you get one of the most remarkable standard engines in the industry, ensuring you have plenty of muscle to enjoy.

Powering the 2026 GMC Canyon is a 2.7L TurboMax turbocharged I-4 engine that delivers 310 horsepower and a remarkable 430 lb-ft of torque, the same standard engine you’ll find in the full-size GMC Sierra 1500. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and you have your choice of rear-wheel drive (4×2) or four-wheel drive (4×4) to suit your driving style.

Looking at the 2026 Toyota Tacoma, its standard powertrain features a 2.4L turbocharged I-4 engine that offers just 228 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. It’s plain to see just how much more powerful GMC’s engine is, ensuring you have a truck that feels fantastic on the road day after day.

Incredible Towing Capacity for a Midsize Truck

The fantastic engine in the GMC Canyon isn’t just about how great it feels to drive—although don’t get us wrong, it does feel excellent on the road. You also need that power in your truck to handle whatever you want to do with it.

Even though full-size models tend to be a better choice for big towing projects, we know plenty of drivers who depend on their midsize trucks for occasional towing jobs when they don’t need the greater capabilities of a full-size truck. That being said, you still want plenty of towing potential for pulling a boat or a trailer full of soil and fertilizer for a weekend landscaping project.

With all of the power the Canyon’s standard engine provides, you would expect big towing capabilities to go along with it, and you’d be right. The Canyon can tow up to 7,700 lbs when properly equipped, which is incredible for a truck this size.

By comparison, the 2026 Toyota Tacoma with its standard engine can handle just 3,500 lbs of towing—less than half the weight! While Toyota offers some engine upgrades that help boost towing, it still tops out at 6,500 lbs when properly equipped, which remains far behind what the Canyon can do. So it’s easy to hook up a trailer to your GMC Canyon, load it with everything you need, and take care of whatever you’re doing that day.

Standard Payload You Can Count On

Towing is only part of the equation when evaluating what a truck can do, and payload is just as important to many drivers. The 2026 GMC Canyon offers a maximum payload rating of 1,640 lbs, while the Tacoma, with its standard engine, can handle just 1,500 lbs. That’s nearly a 10% difference, which can really matter if you need a truck that you know you can depend on to handle whatever you need to do each day.

Whether that means loading up the bed for some tailgating on the weekend or piling drywall in it to make some repairs at home, the Canyon is ready to do a lot more than the Toyota Tacoma with its standard engine.

Terrific Standard Features, Plus More Options

Choosing the right truck is about more than performance and capabilities—although those things are important. You also want to find great features that enhance your time on the road each day and make it easier to take care of whatever you need to do.

Standard features often illustrate how much a truck manufacturer focuses on your overall driving experience, even though other options can build on them. In the 2026 Tacoma, Toyota offers basic fabric-trimmed seating, an eight-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia display, and a four-speaker sound system in the small XtraCab. Those are fine, but certainly nothing to write home about.

With the 2026 Canyon, GMC gives you several features that surpass what Toyota offers, along with more great options if you want to upgrade your drive. You get a six-way driver’s seat in the Canyon with cloth seating that’s both comfortable and durable, and a six-speaker sound system is standard.

Up front, you’ll find a gorgeous 11.3-inch GMC Premium infotainment system in every model, with Google built-in, paired with an 11-inch color Driver Information Center screen. Plus, higher trims add great features like perforated leather-appointed seating, a Bose Premium sound system, and even a multicolor head-up display that makes it easy to keep track of important information without taking your eyes off the road.

Great Special Editions to Explore

Both the GMC Canyon and the Toyota Tacoma offer numerous trim levels, with plenty of options and features. One of the things we love about how GMC approaches the design of the Canyon is that they take it further by offering a variety of special editions to explore.

For example, the Nightfall Edition for the Canyon includes 20-inch machine-faced aluminum wheels with dark pockets for a striking appearance, Black badging, and rocker protectors, making it a capable and aggressive choice.

There’s even a special AT4X AEV Edition developed in a partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) that features hot-stamped boron steel skid plates, stamped-steel front and rear bumpers, and 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires for the ultimate off-road midsize truck. You won’t find remarkable special editions like these for the Tacoma, which is a shame because they make trucks a lot more fun to shop for.

The GMC Canyon Is the Right Choice

As you can see, the Canyon delivers a wide range of features and options that you won’t find anywhere else, especially not from something like the Toyota Tacoma. Incredible standard performance, big towing capabilities, and remarkable features with innovative special editions available make this a truck beyond its competition.

We love offering the full GMC lineup because its vehicles are truly remarkable, and the Canyon is the perfect illustration of that. Once you’re ready to see what this truck can do for yourself, then our team at Jim Ellis Buick GMC of Atlanta is ready to help you find the powerful and sophisticated midsize pickup that you’ve been looking for.
